Should you buy the current model or wait for a redesign? Use price, incentives, powertrain, timing, depreciation and real ownership needs to decide.
Decide First
There are two very different kinds of "new model year."
Sometimes the next year brings a new paint color, a different package and a small price increase.
Sometimes the next year changes the vehicle so completely that the old and new versions barely answer the same ownership question.
The 2026-to-2028 Toyota Highlander transition is the second kind.
The 2026 Highlander is available with gas and hybrid powertrains.
For 2026, Toyota made all-wheel drive standard across the lineup.
The gas XLE starts at $45,270 before Toyota's dealer processing and handling fee.
The hybrid XLE starts at $47,020.
The gas model uses a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine and Toyota estimates 24 mpg combined.
The hybrid uses a 2.5-liter hybrid system and Toyota estimates up to 35 mpg combined.
Then comes 2028.
Toyota's next-generation Highlander becomes a battery-electric three-row SUV.
No gas engine.
No hybrid powertrain.
The 2028 model will be offered in XLE and Limited grades, with front- or all-wheel drive depending on configuration.
Toyota's current 2028 Highlander materials give a manufacturer-estimated 315 miles for certain AWD versions with the 95.8-kWh battery; final EPA range and real driving range may differ.
The charging port is NACS.
Toyota now expects the all-electric 2028 Highlander to go on sale in early 2027; the 2028 is its model year, not its promised calendar-year delivery date.
And as of Toyota's current announcement, MSRP has not been released.
So the question "Should I buy the 2026 or wait for the 2028?" is not really about model year.
It is about whether you want the outgoing product or the incoming product.
That distinction should control the decision.
The 2026 is a product you can evaluate today.
Price is published.
Fuel economy estimates are published.
Powertrain choices are known.
Inventory can be searched.
Dealers can quote real VINs.
Financing programs can be compared.
Comments are shopper discussion, not verified article evidence.
Comments are not open on AutoUnite yet. Published articles and Ask AutoUnite are the current way to get answers.
AutoUnite content is educational and research-focused. Vehicle information, pricing, ownership costs, maintenance, recalls, and other details may vary by region, dealer, and time.
You can drive one.
The 2028 is partly known and partly not.
Toyota has shown the vehicle and published substantial technical information.
But some important ownership numbers remain open until closer to sale.
MSRP.
Exact trim-by-trim pricing.
Final EPA range ratings.
Real-world dealer inventory.
Actual incentive programs.
Insurance pricing once policies are quoted on production vehicles.
The difference between those two information states matters.
Waiting buys access to the new product.
Buying now buys certainty.
This is one of the most common redesign mistakes.
A shopper sees a 2026 Highlander discounted several thousand dollars and thinks:
"The 2028 will probably only be a little more."
Maybe.
Maybe not.
Toyota has not published final 2028 MSRP yet.
And the 2028 is not simply the same SUV with a fresh grille.
It changes powertrain architecture.
Battery size.
Charging.
Range.
Packaging.
Technology.
Dimensions.
The cost basis can change materially.
Until the manufacturer publishes pricing, any exact comparison is speculation.
That means the shopper should compare:
Known 2026 transaction today
versus
Expected 2028 product with unknown final transaction later
That is a real decision under uncertainty.
If you need gasoline or hybrid flexibility, the answer may already be clear.
The 2026 offers both.
The 2028 Highlander does not.
Toyota is turning Highlander into an all-electric model for this generation.
That means someone who:
Lives in an apartment with unreliable charging.
Tows in conditions where range matters heavily.
Frequently drives long routes through weak charging corridors.
Does not want to own a BEV.
Wants the 2026 hybrid's familiar fuel-and-go routine.
may prefer the outgoing vehicle even if the 2028 looks newer and more advanced.
The redesign is not automatically an upgrade for every owner.
It is a different ownership system.
A shopper who:
Can charge at home.
Drives predictable daily mileage.
Wants electric operation.
Values the larger new wheelbase and redesigned interior.
Wants Toyota's latest safety and multimedia systems.
Wants NACS access.
Plans to keep the vehicle for many years.
may find the 2028 worth waiting for.
Toyota says the 2028 Highlander will have a 14-inch touchscreen, 12.3-inch driver display, Toyota Safety Sense 4.0, vehicle-to-load capability and a reworked platform developed around the battery.
Those are not superficial updates.
For the right household, they change the product's usefulness.
The first price is what you pay.
The second is what uncertainty costs you.
A mature outgoing model has years of owner history.
Dealers know it.
Technicians know it.
Parts pipelines exist.
Insurance companies have data.
Independent shops have experience.
Common complaints are easier to research.
An all-new generation has less history.
That does not mean it will be unreliable.
It means the evidence set is smaller.
Early buyers accept more uncertainty in exchange for access to the newest product.
That is a legitimate trade.
It should be deliberate.
People talk about waiting as if it is free.
It is not always.
What are you driving now?
Does it need repairs?
Are you paying for a rental?
Is your current lease ending?
Is your family outgrowing the vehicle?
Are you taking a major trip?
Are you already upside down and continuing to add miles?
A shopper can save money by waiting.
A shopper can also spend money while waiting.
If the current car needs $3,000 of work and the household was replacing it anyway, the economic value of waiting changes.
Time belongs in the calculation.
When manufacturers and dealers transition from one model year or generation to the next, outgoing inventory may receive pricing support or dealer discounting.
That is not guaranteed.
Inventory matters.
Demand matters.
Manufacturer programs change.
But the economic logic is real.
Dealers do not want aging current-generation inventory sitting indefinitely while customer attention moves to the replacement.
Cox Automotive's August 2026 inventory reporting showed large differences in supply across brands and price bands.
That is why "the 2026 should be discounted" is not enough.
Look at actual days on market and local supply for the exact configuration.
A scarce outgoing hybrid can behave very differently from an overstocked gas trim.
Suppose the 2026 has:
$3,000 dealer discount.
Special APR.
Known insurance.
Available inventory.
Now suppose the 2028 launches at MSRP with no incentives.
The price difference is not only MSRP.
Financing can create another gap.
A lower APR on the outgoing model can save meaningful money over the term.
The FTC recommends comparing the negotiated vehicle price, APR and loan length, not just payment.
That matters even more during model transitions.
The newest vehicle can have the strongest product and the weakest deal.
The outgoing vehicle can have the older product and the strongest deal.
Neither automatically wins.
People often say:
"Never buy the old body style. It will lose value."
A redesign can affect resale because the outgoing generation becomes visibly older overnight.
But depreciation depends on more than styling.
Purchase price matters.
Incentives matter.
Demand matters.
Powertrain desirability matters.
Vehicle condition matters.
Mileage matters.
How long you keep the car matters.
If you buy the outgoing model at a significant discount and keep it eight years, the redesign's first-year resale effect may matter far less than it would to someone trading in 24 months.
Do not pay $5,000 more to avoid a hypothetical $2,000 future value difference.
Run the complete ownership decision.
The outgoing Highlander has a broad historical audience.
Gas buyers.
Hybrid buyers.
Families that fuel in five minutes.
The 2028 is EV-only.
That can create two opposing resale possibilities.
The new EV could become highly desirable and make the previous generation feel dated.
Or some used buyers may specifically seek the final gas/hybrid generation because they do not want an EV.
Nobody can know the future market precisely today.
That uncertainty is itself part of the decision.
A shopper who plans a short ownership period should care more about it than someone who plans to keep the vehicle until it is ten years old.
The Department of Energy says most EV drivers charge overnight at home.
If you have dependable home charging, an EV can start each morning with the energy needed for normal daily use.
If you do not, the ownership experience changes.
That makes the 2026 hybrid and 2028 EV difficult to compare with a simple fuel-cost spreadsheet.
One is designed around gasoline availability.
The other is designed around a charging routine.
For many households, the important 2028 Highlander question is not the 315-mile manufacturer estimate, but whether its charging routine will work.
It may be:
Where will it charge every night?
Toyota currently estimates up to 315 miles of total driving range for 2028 Highlander XLE AWD and Limited AWD models equipped with the 95.8-kWh battery; this is a manufacturer estimate, not an EPA rating or real-world guarantee.
Toyota itself states actual range will vary based on weather, driving style and other factors.
Until final EPA ratings and production vehicles are in customer hands, shoppers should treat preliminary manufacturer range exactly as labeled:
An estimate.
That is not a criticism.
It is normal new-product discipline.
The final buying decision should use the best current verified number available at the time of purchase.
Some shoppers refuse to buy the first year of a redesign.
Others want the first one delivered.
Neither position is automatically rational.
The first model year can introduce:
New technology.
New features.
New platform.
New software.
New manufacturing processes.
It can also deliver improvements the old product can never receive.
The correct question is:
How much do you value mature evidence versus the new capability?
A risk-averse owner keeping the car ten years may choose differently from a technology-first buyer with a short lease.
On a modern vehicle, redesign risk is not only mechanical.
Infotainment.
Phone-key systems.
Driver assistance.
Charging software.
Route planning.
Over-the-air updates.
App integration.
The 2028 Highlander moves into a more software-dependent ownership model than the outgoing gas/hybrid vehicle.
That can be a benefit.
It also changes what "new generation" means.
The quality of the ownership experience will include software behavior that is hard to fully judge from a launch press release.
Toyota says the 2028 Highlander will use Toyota Safety Sense 4.0.
The 2026 has Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+.
A shopper can reasonably value the newer suite.
That does not mean the 2026 suddenly becomes unsafe.
Compare the actual features that matter.
Automatic emergency braking behavior.
Lane assistance.
Blind-spot features.
Parking systems.
Driver monitoring where applicable.
Do not reduce safety to "newer number equals safe, older number equals bad."
Look at the systems.
The 2026 Highlander gas model is rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped.
The 2026 hybrid is rated up to 3,500 pounds.
If towing is central to the household, the 2028 EV must be evaluated against the final published tow rating, charging impact and real trip pattern.
An owner who regularly tows 3,500 pounds 300 miles is solving a different problem from someone carrying children around town.
"Wait for the redesign" is weak advice until the actual use case is known.
The 2026 Highlander can offer seven- or eight-person seating depending on grade and configuration.
Toyota says the 2028 seats up to seven.
The new vehicle also has a much longer wheelbase.
That may improve packaging in some ways.
But a household that specifically needs eight seats should not wait for a seven-seat redesign just because it is new.
One seat can decide the entire comparison.
This is why product fit should beat model-year excitement.
Family A:
Owns a six-year-old SUV that still runs well.
Has a garage with 240V power.
Drives 45 miles most weekdays.
Rarely tows.
Plans to keep the next vehicle eight years.
Likes the new EV.
Can wait.
Waiting deserves serious consideration.
Family B:
Lease ends in six weeks.
No home charging.
Needs eight seats twice a week.
Tows a 4,000-pound trailer several times each summer.
Local dealer has a discounted 2026 gas Highlander.
Waiting for the 2028 may solve the wrong problem.
Same headline.
Different answer.
Family C:
Can charge at home but is uncertain about an EV as the only long-trip vehicle.
Drives 18,000 miles per year.
Wants strong fuel economy.
Needs the car immediately.
Plans to keep it ten years.
A 2026 Highlander Hybrid at a strong transaction price may be attractive precisely because it is the final version of this product concept.
The 2028 is newer.
The 2026 may fit better.
That is not settling.
It is choosing the right system.
Waiting becomes more rational when:
The redesign solves a real need.
Your current vehicle is inexpensive to keep.
Final pricing will arrive before you must buy.
You can tolerate launch timing uncertainty.
You value new technology enough to accept first-year uncertainty.
Your charging/fueling situation fits the new powertrain.
You plan to own long enough to benefit from the change.
Buying the outgoing model becomes more rational when:
The current vehicle fits your actual needs better.
There is a meaningful discount or financing advantage.
You need the vehicle before the redesign arrives.
The current model has a mature reliability/ownership evidence base.
You prefer gas or hybrid.
You need eight-passenger configuration.
You tow in a way the outgoing model already supports.
You do not want to gamble on unknown launch pricing.
Do not ask:
Which one is better?
Ask:
What would I be waiting for?
If the answer is:
A new grille.
A larger screen.
One feature I barely care about.
Then maybe do not wait.
If the answer is:
An entirely different powertrain.
A packaging change I need.
A safety feature I value.
A capability the current model cannot provide.
Then waiting becomes meaningful.
"I don't want to buy the old one right before the new one comes out."
That is fear of timing, not a decision criterion.
There is always another model year.
There is always another redesign.
You can wait forever if "newer exists soon" is enough.
The purchase should happen when product fit, timing and economics line up.
Not when the calendar gives you permission.
"The salesperson says the new one will cost way more."
Maybe it will.
Maybe it will not.
Until Toyota publishes the MSRP, nobody should present an exact 2028 Highlander price as fact.
A dealership can explain why outgoing inventory may be attractive.
It should not invent future numbers to create urgency.
Write two columns.
Exact VIN.
Selling price.
Incentives.
APR.
Trade value.
Insurance.
Fuel cost.
Seating.
Towing.
Warranty.
Known ownership evidence.
Availability date.
Known product changes.
Unknown price.
Expected availability.
Charging setup cost.
Insurance estimate when available.
Final EPA range when available.
Seating.
Towing when published.
New technology you actually value.
Cost of keeping the current vehicle while waiting.
Now you are comparing a transaction with a future product instead of comparing "old" with "new."
A model-year decision is not a fashion decision.
A redesign can change enough that the choice becomes closer to choosing between two different vehicles.
The 2026 and 2028 Highlander prove it.
One is a mature gas/hybrid three-row SUV.
The next is Toyota's first U.S.-assembled three-row BEV.
The headline badge stays Highlander.
The ownership equation changes.
That is why the right answer cannot come from model year alone.
Buy the product that fits the life.
Wait only when the thing you are waiting for actually matters.
